The ASA A-1 Launch Vehicle
The A-1 rocket is intended to
be configurable for the user, capable of carrying large payloads (up to 100
lbs) beyond the edge of space, or smaller payloads much higher. This launch vehicle is built with the
researcher in mind, catering the vehicles’ performance specifications
to the requirements of the experiment on board. Using a throttleable liquid-fueled rocket
motor and onboard vehicle intelligence & health management, the rocket
is able to control the acceleration forces it experiences during
flight. Reduced acceleration loads
(relative to solid-fuel propulsion) allows the A-1 to carry more sensitive
experiments and instruments.
Recovery of the A-1 will be
accomplished using a multi-stage parachute system consisting of a
supersonic drogue, high-altitude main, and low-altitude main.
Additionally, variable
experiment racks allow for high-altitude deployment of experiments, if
desired.
The purpose of this rocket,
therefore, is to facilitate microgravity research to not only for ASA
programs but also for collegiate and independent research
organizations.
