Projects @ ASA As stated in our mission statement, ASA was formed to safely challenge the technical limits of amateur spaceflight. In following with that mission, we are engaged in very exciting and interesting projects. These pages outline the projects that we are pursing. The “Getting Technical with ASA” section will further describe some of the nuances and design challenges of these endeavors.
High School
Rocket Motor Test Our primary effort at the
moment is the development of a rocket motor test program for high school
students. As part of this program,
three high school teams will work with ASA to build and test fire a real liquid-fueled
rocket motor. Through this program,
student’s math and science skills will be enhanced while they learn
lessons in working as a team and hands-on science. This program may be the first of its kind,
and ASA is excited to offer this opportunity to students in the We are currently implementing this program… additional information. Student Teams Achieving Research in Space In
addition to the student rocket motor test, we are also working on a program
to give University and High School students the opportunity to build
microgravity experiments and then launch them into space on board one of
ASA’s vehicles. The STARS
program is being developed in the background, and will be offered to the
public as soon as possible The Launch Vehicle In support of the ASA STARS Program, ASA is constructing a large sounding rocket to carry the student experiments into space. This vehicle is tailored specifically for microgravity research, utilizing a throttleable liquid-fueled rocket motor (for a smooth, low-g flight into space), a cold-gas reaction control system for attitude control while in space, and a full-vehicle recovery system. Read more about this vehicle here. |
