Aerospace Systems Engineering

An Introductory Program for High School Students

ASA is currently implementing a unique program designed to teach basic engineering skills to high school students via the design, construction, and test firing of a liquid fueled rocket motor.

Three teams of high school students will participate in this program, in three distinct engineering teams:

·         Civil Engineering:  Brazoswood High School   (Brazosport ISD)

·         Computer Engineering:  Clear Lake High School   (Clear Creek ISD)

·         Propulsion Engineering:   Clear Brook High School  (Clear Creek ISD), Brazoswood High School, and Clear Lake High School

These high school teams will work with ASA engineers to design and build the major components of a rocket motor.  The culmination of his program will be the test firing of the liquid fueled rocket motor built by the propulsion engineering team, on the test stand built by the civil engineering team, using the computer system developed by the computer engineering team.  This exciting application of engineering principles will increase not only the students’ science and math abilities, but will also instill a great sense of accomplishment and team spirit – key attributes of successful engineering.

This program is made possible through the endless efforts of our volunteers and the generous contributions of local businesses and individuals.

This program is currently underway and on-schedule.  Here are a few highlights of the program:

·         The first component of this program ran from March to June, 2006.  The current session has been running since October, 2006

·         The three student teams will build a rocket motor test stand, the computer system used to control the rocket, and the rocket motor itself

·         The rocket motor will be test-fired by students at the BCMA site in southwest Brazoria County in August, 2007

·         Each student team will work independently with ASA engineers to design and build their component of the program

·         Rocket motor and computer system development will occur in Clear Lake, Texas

·         The purpose of this program is to challenge the scientific and mathematic skills of students through hands-on engineering education
