The initial civil engineering work day occurred today. The students were introduced to the basic concepts of Civil Engineering, focusing on the following:
Foundation design (soil behavior, concrete formulations and effects, local water table impacts to design, and shapes and depths of foundations)
Basic 2-dimensional statics
Theory of moments and forces
Buckling
These concepts were used to developed a preliminary design for the test stand. This design will be passed through an ASA design review engineer, and the team will discuss the results at a future meeting.
The first work day at the ASA test site will occur on April 2.

The initial ASA/Civil Engineering Team kick-off/parents meeting occurred today. The team and their parents were introduced to ASA personnel (Rob, Paul, and Tom) and learned about the plans for the coming months. Needless to say, everyone was excited about this opportunity, and is looking forward to the program.
The first classroom day for the students will be March 18.
