ASA’s Rocket Motor Test Program Resumes
The ASE program has resumed operations! ASA met with students from Clear Lake High School
today to re-introduce them to the ASE program and welcome a few new
faces. The first work day will occur
on 9/23.
You can find out more about this program and follow each
team’s progress here.

ASA’s Rocket Motor Test Program Breaks for the
Summer
This weekend was ASA’s last work day of the summer. Due to scheduling issues out of
ASA’s control, the ASE program is delayed until the Fall. To give the students and engineers a
break, therefore, we will all take a break for the next six weeks. Student participation will begin again
after school starts.
This weekend, the computer team hooked up the rocket
motor ignitor to their computer system, but had trouble with an unexpected
voltage drop on the commanding lines.
Although not all of the solenoids worked via the computer, the
students were able to run the ignitor for their parents.
The propulsion team assembled the fuel system plumbing
and tested the system pressure drop using water and compressed air. These water flow tests demonstrated to the
team that the plumbing pressure losses (due to lines, valves, fittings,
etc) were within expected limits.

ASA’s Aerospace Systems Engineering Program
for High School Students is Underway
ASA engineers met today with eight high school students
from Brazoswood
High School in
Brazosport ISD. This student team
will be part of the Civil Engineering component of the ASA ASE program, and
will work with ASA engineers to design and build a test stand capable of
absorbing the 2,000 pounds of thrust generated by the rocket motor which
will be built by the Propulsion Engineering team.
This program, which began today, will run until
mid-June, culminating in the static test firing of a liquid-fueled rocket
motor. Read more about this program here.

Gulf Coast Regional Spaceport Supports
ASA’s Student-Run Motor Test Firing Program
Today, ASA met with the Gulf Coast Regional Spaceport
Development Corporation (GCRSDC) to follow up on the initial rocket motor
test proposal, presented to the GCRS in June, 2005. During the meeting, ASA again outlined the
aspects of this student-run rocket motor test, and answered questions posed
by the GCRSDC board. At the end of
the presentation, the GCRS Board approved a motion to support ASA’s
development of a rocket motor test program and to support the necessary fundraising
activities to ensure success.
The proposed event involves test firing a liquid fueled
rocket motor in a public venue, similar to the ASA/GCRS launch in May,
2003. To accomplish this, ASA will build rocket motor, a rocket motor
test stand (which would become a permanent fixture at the GCRS), and a data
acquisition system. The program will involve three student teams who
will work with ASA along the way and participate in the test day
events. The intended student team subsystems are Civil Engineering,
Computer Engineering, and Motor Manufacturing.
