ASE Program Successful –

Thank you to all of the ASA students and volunteers that made the pilot Aerospace Systems Engineering program a success.  Over the course of three years, three teams of high school students built a rocket motor, computer control system, two test stands, and performed four test firing events.  These students have moved on to college with a substantial head start on their scientific careers and ASA is taking a well deserved break.  Thank you again for your hard work and dedication.

News on the final test firing event, May 30-31, 2009

ASA performed three test firings during the test firing weekend outlined below.   The system performed well during each of the test firings of 2, 5, and 15 seconds in duration.   Here is a picture from the third test firing, when the motor was producing ~2,250 pounds of thrust:

Rocket Test Firing Announcement:

ASA is planning to test fire our 2000 lb thrust rocket motor several times during the last weekend in May.   This event is intended to be an educational opportunity for aspiring engineers in high school and college and is open to the public.

When:  May 30 at 4pm, May 31 at 2pm, and possibly additional times

Where:  The test firing will take place at the BMCA model airfield east of Lake Jackson, Texas.  Here is a map to the test site:  MAP

What:  This rocket motor was built by high school students and volunteer engineers through ASA’s Aerospace Systems Engineering program, a hands-on engineering outreach opportunity in south Houston.  This event is an additional test firing of the rocket motor needed to work out some bugs in the rocket’s performance…and ASA wants to open this event up to the public to increase the educational opportunity of the test firing.

Who:  If you are interested in engineering or aerospace and want to see, touch, and hear a rocket motor, this event is for you.

Details on a previous test firing:

Here is a picture and video of a previous test firing of the rocket motor:

Refer to the test firing page for more details.

The test stand was built in May, 2006 by the Civil Engineering Team.  The upcoming test firing will use the steel structure shown above but it will be mounted on a mobile platform.
